Children's Healthcare: An Overnight Crisis Decades in the Making

November 21st, 2022

With children's hospitals across Canada overburdened and under strain in late 2022, Senator Moodie and Children's Healthcare Canada hosted a timely Parliamentary Roundtable exploring how we got here, the current context and how we move forward.

Facilitated by Andre Picard (Globe & Mail), the panel included Dr. Ronni Cohn (President & CEO, SickKids Hospital), Dr. Katharine Smart (Past President, CMA), Dr. Fatima Kakkar (Infectious Disease Physician, CHU Ste-Justine Children’s Hospital), and Dr. Antonia Stang (Chair of Pediatrics, University of Calgary).

Letter in Support of a National School Food Program

In February 2023, Senators Moodie, Francis,  Gagné, Kutcher and Patealong with a number of their colleagues—sent a letter to the Minister of Finance in support of a national school food policy ahead of Budget 2023.

National Pharmacare that doesn't leave kids behind - Infographic

As the government moves forward on pharmacare, we must make sure we don't leave kids behind.

Did you know that in Canada, 70% of prescriptions for kids are made off-label? Off-labelling means a drug is being used in a way that isn't approved by Health Canada. This means that drugs for kids are often less safe than those for adults, especially in rural areas.

Experts in children's health are clear on what we need to do to keep our kids safe. By creating a streamlined application pathway for pediatric drugs approved by trusted foreign partners (like the USA or Europe) and requiring drug companies to submit data on how their new medications affect kids, we can ensure that every child in Canada gets safe access to the medications they need.
