Safe and Productive Development and Use of AI

Inquiry - The Need for Safe and Productive Development and Use of AI

On November 26, 2024, I launched an inquiry on the Need for Safe and Productive Development and Use of AI in Canada.

AI is already having a wide and pervasive impact on every aspect of our lives. Inaction is not an option. We cannot let this technology move forward while standing on the sidelines and hoping for the best.

That's why I chose to launch this inquiry. As legislators, we have the duty and the tools to actively examine, understand, and have an impact on the development and use of AI, especially to ensure that it is safe and productive.

Connecting with Canada’s AI Community

I’ve been meeting with leaders across Canada’s AI ecosystem—from innovative startups and major tech firms to top researchers and academics.

These conversations are giving me valuable insight into the opportunities AI presents for Canada’s future, as well as the social, ethical, and economic challenges we urgently need to address.

I recently visited the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) and look forward to continuing these conversations at the other two national AI institutes.

Engaging with Global Leadership on AI

Canada cannot act alone in confronting the challenges that AI brings. In my role as a Senator, I have participated in multilateral conferences with our international partners to discuss how we can work together on AI, including the AI in Security Workshop hosted by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and meetings on the collaborative opportunities within Five Eyes alliance, including on the implications of the rise of AI in weapons system on our defence strategies.
